From ZBrush to Blender: Exporting VDM Textures for Seamless Integration

How to Export VDM Textures from ZBrush to Blender

For individuals who work with VDMS in ZBrush and are looking to seamlessly transition them to Blender, or for content creators selling their work on platforms like ArtStation, understanding the export process is crucial. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you export VDM textures from ZBrush to Blender effortlessly:

1. Load VDM in ZBrush

  • Navigate to Brush > Load Brush.
  • Open the VDM ZBrush file containing the VDM you wish to export. Ensure that primitive objects are loaded to proceed.

2. Convert VDM to Mesh

  • Select the desired VDM.
  • Go to Brush > To Mesh to convert the VDM brush to a mesh.

3. Create VDM Texture

  • After converting to mesh, proceed to Texture > From Mesh to generate the VDM texture.

4. Adjust Texture for Blender Compatibility

  • If the texture displays a red color with discrepancies, navigate to Deformation.
  • Select the X-axis and click on Mirror to correct the texture. For any blue sections at the bottom, mirror along the Y-axis.

5. Export VDM in OpenEXR Format

  • Go to Export and save the VDM texture as an OpenEXR file for Blender compatibility.

6. Prepare VDM Texture in Photoshop

  • Open the exported VDM texture in Photoshop.
  • Navigate to Image > Adjustments > Channel Mixer.
  • In the Green Channel, set Green to zero and Blue to 200%.
  • In the Blue Channel, set Blue to zero and Green to 200% to optimize the texture for Blender integration.

7. Import VDM Texture in Blender

  • Duplicate the draw brush in Blender.
  • Import the VDM texture.
  • Disable Clamp.
  • Configure the mapping settings to Area Plane, enable Vector Displacement, and set Stroke Method to Drag Dots with Fall Off as Constant.
  • Adjust the strength to 1 for optimal results.

By following these steps, you can seamlessly export VDM textures from ZBrush to Blender, ensuring a smooth transition with correct texture display and compatibility.
