How to Extend a Character's Walk Cycle from Mixamo in Blender and 3D Studio Max

Have you ever imported a character from Mixamo into Blender or 3D Studio Max and found the walk cycle to be too short? Fret not! In this guide, we will walk you through the process of extending a character's walk cycle to create a seamless animation loop that fits your needs perfectly.

Extending Walk Cycles in Blender

  1. Importing the Character:

    • Start by importing your character with the walk cycle from Mixamo into Blender using the FBX format.
    • After import, ensure that the walk cycle appears short and may have texture issues.
  2. Adjusting Textures:

    • Hide the armature for better visibility.
    • Navigate to the material properties, set the blend mode to opaque to correct any texture anomalies.
  3. Extending the Animation:

    • Select the entire character and switch to the graph editor.
    • Zoom out to view all animation curves.
    • Press Shift + E and choose Make Cyclic to repeat the animation seamlessly.
  4. Creating Linear Motion:

    • Focus on the vertical line (typically the Z location axis) in the hips.
    • Apply linear extrapolation to make the character move in a straight line indefinitely.

Extending Walk Cycles in 3D Studio Max

  1. Importing and Editing Animation:

    • Import your character into 3D Studio Max and ensure the complete selection.
    • Access the curve editor in 3D Studio Max to manipulate the animation.
  2. Adjusting Animation Range:

    • Select all curves and set the out-of-range type to 'Cycle'.
    • Identify the vertical line in the hips, usually the Y-axis.
    • Set the out-of-range type to 'Linear' to establish continuous motion in a specific direction.

By following these steps, you can successfully extend the walk cycle of your character from Mixamo in both Blender and 3D Studio Max, allowing for a more extended and seamless animation experience.
