Importing Mixamo Characters to Unity: A Step-by-Step Tutorial

In this tutorial, we will guide you on how to import Mixamo characters into Unity for your game development projects. Following similar steps as in the Unreal Engine tutorial, you can seamlessly bring characters to life with animations. Let's dive into the process step by step.

Selecting the Character and Animation

  1. Begin by visiting the Mixamo website and choose a character to import. For this example, we will select a captivating zombie character.
  2. Next, find a suitable animation for the character. In this case, we coincidentally discover a zombie idle animation that complements our selection perfectly.
  3. Download the animation in the FBX format tailored for Unity.

Integration into Unity

  1. Once the download is complete, navigate to your Unity project. If you have not set up a project yet, import a simple model like a pillar to follow along.
  2. Drag and drop the downloaded FBX file of the zombie character into the models folder of your Unity project.
  3. Within the Animation tab, choose the idle animation and ensure the loop time option is selected to create a continuous animation loop.
  4. Apply the changes and move to the Materials tab. Extract the textures from the FBX file into a new folder named "zombie" under the textures directory.
  5. Fix any issues with the imported textures, such as normal maps, to ensure the character is fully textured.
  6. Drag the textured character into your scene, adjust its orientation, and set up the camera view.
  7. Preview the scene by starting the game. While the character is visible, the animation might not be playing yet.

Implementing the Animation

  1. To activate the animation, drag the idle animation clip onto the character.
  2. Unity will create an Animator Controller with the idle animation as the default option, automatically assigning it to the zombie character.
  3. Your zombie character is now successfully imported with the looping idle animation integrated.

By following these steps, you can import Mixamo characters seamlessly into Unity, adding life and movement to your game projects. If you found this tutorial helpful, show your support by liking the video and subscribing to our channel for more insightful content.
