Optimizing Marvelous Designer Assets: A Step-by-Step Guide

Marvelous Designer is a powerful tool for creating high-quality 3D clothing and fabric simulations. In this blog post, we will walk you through the process of optimizing Marvelous Designer assets for efficient texturing and game readiness. Follow along as we demonstrate how to create a low-poly version of your mesh, re-topologize it, and use a special modifier to morph it into the final high-poly design.

Creating Low-Poly and High-Poly Versions

  • Start by exporting your main version of the mesh as you normally would.
  • Next, create a flat version of the mesh by selecting the entire design, right-clicking, and choosing "Reset 2D Arrangement."
  • Export this flat version to have both the low-poly and high-poly versions of your mesh ready for optimization.

Re-Topologizing the Mesh

  • To morph the flat piece into the garment shape, click on both the shirt and the flat part.
  • Navigate to the Shape Keys and create a basis before selecting "Join as Shapes."
  • Utilize the retopology process by using shapes as a guide and applying a shrink wrap modifier for smooth alignment.
  • Ensure that pieces align perfectly with matching vertices counts for seamless merging later on.

Applying the Surface Deform Modifier

  • Add the "Surface Deform" modifier to the low-poly version and set the target as the high-poly version.
  • Bind the modifier to enable the low-poly version to follow the deformations of the high-poly design accurately.

Finalizing the UV Mapping and Cleaning Up

  • Access the orthographic view to unwrap the mesh for UV mapping.
  • Apply the modifier, clean up the mesh by merging vertices, and ensure all pieces are connected smoothly.
  • Use the slide vertices tool to adjust any misaligned rows of topology for a polished final result.
