Tutorial: Importing Blender Characters into Unreal Engine

Introduction

In this tutorial, we will explore the process of exporting a character created in Blender and importing it into Unreal Engine. Whether you are using Unreal Engine 4 or the newer Unreal Engine 5, this guide will help you seamlessly transfer your 3D creations between these powerful platforms.

Keywords: Blender characters, Unreal Engine, character export, character import, animations

Creating the Character

Assuming you have already designed your character in Blender, complete with mesh, UV map, armature, and animations, ensure that you have named your armature correctly. In Blender, press F2 to rename the armature to 'root' to avoid any issues during the transfer to Unreal Engine. Additionally, give your character a recognizable name, such as 'Minecraft Zombie'.

Exporting from Blender

Before exporting your character, ensure that no unwanted elements are selected. Reset the bone rotations by selecting all bones (A) in pose mode and resetting them with Alt+R. Save your file and then proceed to export by selecting the mesh and the armature, going to File -> Export -> FBX.

  • Ensure you limit the export to selected objects.
  • Under Geometry, select 'Face' and apply the necessary modifiers and armatures.
  • Choose to export only deform bones and bake animations if applicable.
  • Export the FBX file with the specified settings.

Importing into Unreal Engine

Navigate to Unreal Engine and import the FBX file by either dragging it into the interface or right-clicking and selecting 'import'. When prompted, choose 'None' for the skeleton, ensure animations are included, and proceed with the import.

  • Wait for the import process to complete, and you will see the materials, skeletal mesh, animations, and related assets imported into Unreal Engine.

Testing in Unreal Engine

Upon successful import, you can test your character and animations within Unreal Engine. Verify that the textures are applied correctly and test different animations to ensure a seamless transition from Blender to Unreal Engine.
